Postgraduate Funding Opportunities

The following opportunities are currently open at our School

Sibanye-Stillwater DigiMine MSc Industrial Engineering BSc

This position will remain open until filled.

We are looking for one full-time suitable candidate to conduct an MSc research project on “Modelling and optimization of emergency evacuation routes in restricted-space scenarios for underground mining”.

The project involves (but is not limited to) the following objectives:

  • Numerical modelling in combination with Computational Fluid Dynamics for emergency evacuation routes in restricted space for underground mining under different gasses and fire scenarios.
  • Identification and spatial mapping of critical infrastructure in underground mining environment at the pilot study site.
  • Optimization of emergency evacuation routes using advanced numerical models including network analysis topologies.

The bursary will be funded by Sibanye-Stillwater Digital Mining Laboratory (DigiMine) as per the Wits Mining Institute (WMI) bursary policy. The bursary includes and is subjected to the following conditions:

  • MSc Tuition and Registration Fee for two years (as per Wits fee statement)
  • Living Stipend R10,000/month for the first 12 months and R7,500/month for the next maximum of six months (stipend will be processed on a quarterly basis and is subject to satisfactory performance and contribution in the laboratory)
  • Access to state-of-the-art software (if required)
  • Dedicated research desk with good computational facilities
  • Opportunities to attend the courses/seminars/conferences (subject to availability of funds and performance)
  • 足球竞彩app排名 needs to be present and work from DigiMine all the time
  • 足球竞彩app排名 and supervisor(s) need to adhere to the WMI research policy

Interested candidates, please forward the following items to mncedisi.dewa@wits.ac.za, weihua.ho@wits.ac.za and mahsan.mahboob@wits.ac.za

  • Personal CV
  • Undergraduate transcript and certificates (for current final year students, please provide your transcript to date)
  • Motivation Letter
  • 2 Letters of references/good conduct

The bursary is open to all, however, preference will be given to the SA citizens.

Evaluation of a desktop SLA 3D printer for construction of a compliant PIV suitable flow models

This position will remain open until filled.

When doing in-vitro experimental work on biofluids, we are required to fabricate a flow model (or flow phantom) which is a transparent internal flow channel that has complex surface features. Current method of constructing such a phantom is based around the investment casting technique. This project aims at evaluating the use of SLA 3D printing as a possible method of fabricating a flexible flow model.

See below for a video of such flow phantoms being used for dye flow visualization:

An opportunity exists to collaborate with Aston University in the UK for a Masters or PhD project in biomedical engineering.

Interested students should email Weihua.ho@wits.ac.za with a recent academic transcript and CV and a short motivation (no more than 100 words).
