WHAT CAN I DO WITH A POSTGRADUATE DEGREE IN MATHEMATICS?
Our recent graduates at honours, masters, and doctoral level have, amongst other things,
gone on to doctoral and post-doctoral study overseas;
- found highly paid positions in analysing futures/ finance for consulting firms and financial institutions;
- found good positions in the computer industry;
- joined the academic staff of leading South African universities;
- improved their mathematics qualifications, hence enhancing their positions and prospects in the secondary and tertiary education sectors;
Our graduates hold positions in local universities and American universities in areas as diverse as business administration, computer science and pure mathematics. In short, a postgraduate degree in mathematics at Wits opens the way for a variety of careers, and in the process, students have developed a perspective of analysis and proof that is particularly mathematical.

WHAT IS THE FIRST STEP IN APPLYING?
If you are a student from Wits, it is especially easy: speak to the relevant course co-ordinator.

If you are a student from a South African university other than Wits, you can phone or write or e-mail the course co-ordinator, or write to the Faculty of Science, Witwatersrand University, Private Bag 3, Wits 2050, South Africa.
If you are a student from outside South Africa, you should contact the International Office and your query will be forwarded to the School.
WHEN TO APPLY
A student may apply at any time, however, the beginning of the academic year (January/February) is best as the year you register counts as a full year towards your degree, which must be completed in the allocated time period. Before applying, please ensure that you have a supervisor willing to supervise your dissertation/thesis.
