Can I change universities on a study visa?

No. Your study visa is institution-specific. To change universities, you must apply for a "change of conditions" through VFS Global with acceptance from the new institution.

Can I work while studying?

Yes, you can work part-time for a maximum of 20 hours per week while on a study visa (Immigration Amendment Act 2011, Act No. 13 of 2011).

What if my visa expires while I'm waiting for renewal?

Apply at least 60 days before expiry. If you've submitted your renewal application on time and are waiting for processing, keep your proof of submission as evidence of compliance.

Can I travel in/out of South Africa while my visa is being renewed?

This is risky. If you leave SA while your visa renewal is being processed, you may not be able to re-enter until the new visa is issued. Check with VFS Global before making travel plans.

Do I need medical aid during university holidays?

YES. Your medical aid must be valid for the entire calendar year (until 31 December), including holiday periods. You may need medical care at any time.

What happens if my passport expires before my studies end?

Renew your passport through your embassy in SA, then apply through VFS Global to transfer your study visa to your new passport.

I'm from a visa-exempt country. Do I still need a study visa?

YES. Even passport holders from visa-exempt countries must obtain a study visa for full degree studies at a South African university.

Can I apply for permanent residence while studying?

Study visas do not lead to permanent residence. You would need to qualify under a different category. Consult with an immigration attorney for advice on permanent residence pathways.
