Innovate, Engineer, Transform - Your Future at Wits EIE

Study electrical and information engineering at the top university in Africa. In the 2026 Centre for World University Rankings, Wits placed 1st on the continent and 200th worldwide: the global top 1%.

Alumni who shape the field

For nearly a century (our first engineers graduated in 1926), Wits EIE has produced people who go on to lead, at home and around the world.

Among them: a Research Director at Google DeepMind, named to TIME's 100 Most Influential People in AI; the founder of what was once the largest internet provider in Africa, who went on to co-found a Boston venture firm ranked among the world's top seed investors; one of the pioneers of the optical-fibre technology that carries the internet; and a professor at MIT who helped shape the field of machine vision.

Closer to home, our graduates lead some of South Africa's best-known technology companies. One is Executive Chairman of the Takealot Group. Another leads the AI and engineering firm Opti-Num Solutions. Entelect, today one of South Africa's largest software companies, was founded in 2001 by a Wits EIE graduate. A newer generation is already building, including the founder of the fintech company DocFox, which drew Silicon Valley investment.

When you study here, you join that lineage.

Work on problems that matter

Optical AI and laser communications. Brain-computer interfaces and prosthetics. The physics of lightning. High-voltage engineering. The next generation of wireless networks. Our research spans the frontier, and much of it is led by postgraduate students.

Four ways to specialise

Electrical Engineering, Information Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or Game Design & Digital Arts. ECSA-accredited and recognised internationally through the Washington Accord.

Accreditation

The Wits Electrical Engineering (EE) and Electrical Engineering with Information Engineering (IE) degrees enjoy accreditation and recognition both locally and internationally by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).

Accreditation by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSAmeans that our graduates are recognised as meeting the educational requirements toward becoming registered as a Professional Engineer (PrEng). This accreditation is a stringent process that requires a full audit of our undergraduate programmes every five years. This ensures the high quality of our degrees and is typically reflected in industries preference to employ graduates of professional degrees over others.

In addition, the accreditation of the programme by ECSA provides recognition for our graduates from 1999 onwards in countries that have signed the Washington Accord. These include Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, China, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom and the United States of America.
