Education, professional consultation, and technical assistance to the Wits School of Education
Purpose

The Educational Information and Engineering Technology (EDIET) Division prepares professionals to lead in the use of Engineering, Vocational and Information and Communication Technologies within the Education sector.

Aim

To understand the role of Engineering, Vocational and Information and Communications Technology in teaching and learning; by connecting learning and development theories and practices.

Approach

The EDIET division exposes students to a wide range of emerging digital technologies and digital pedagogies. The division is concerned with the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and research skills of students seeking to integrate ICTs in their classrooms and other workplaces. As a base for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research, it promotes the concept of Digital Education – an emerging concept which focuses on innovatively using digital technologies and tools for teaching and learning. It encourages the philosophical, sociological, and psychological study of digital technologies and digital pedagogies in education.

The division is positioned to become a leader in South Africa in Engineering, Vocational and Information and Communication Technologies as it supports and provides student teachers and working educational professionals with the ability to better organise, manage and integrate technology in their teaching and learning environments. The principles that drive the activities of the division are based on learning and development, research inquiry, innovation and keeping abreast of the times.

The career prospects of EDIET students are diverse, both within the public and private sector.  The division’s focus is on developing educational professionals to teach and model Engineering, Vocational and ICTs within any educational context including, but not limited to, Primary Schools, High Schools and Tertiary Institution.
