Overview

Situated in the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital we are the core research laboratory of the Department of Internal Medicine and provide research support to the clinical divisions.

Projects investigate disease conditions at a molecular and cellular level. Our highly trained staff can offer expertise in a wide range of DNA, RNA and protein based techniques.

Aim:

  • To create an enabling research environment for all researchers and students
  • To provide facilities and expertise to cater for all aspects of cellular and molecular based research

Units:

  • The Carbohydrate and Lipid Metabolism Research Unit
    This unit investigates the epidemiological, clinical and biochemical aspects of common diseases affecting lipid and glucose metabolism in the different ethnic groups of Southern Africa. These include familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) and other dyslipidaemias, insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis as well as other related metabolic disorders.
  • Pulmonology Infection Research Unit
  • Clinical HIV Research Unit
  • Hepatitis Virus Diversity Research Programme
    This group investigates variation of the hepatitis viruses, their functional characterization and role in the clinical manifestations of liver disease.
