Undergraduate studies
At the undergraduate level, the department offers the interdisciplinary component FVPA (Film, Visual & Performing Arts) of an academic major which is open to all students in the Faculty of Humanities. FVPA courses may be partnered with discipline-specific academic courses offered in WSOA to constitute a major; these include: Theatre and Performance Studies, History of Art, Digital Art Theory, Screen Studies, and Critical Music Studies.
At the senior undergraduate level (4th year), the department offers courses in Digital Humanities, Participatory Cultures and Film Studies which may be taken by WSOA students in their 4th year of study, or by students enrolled in an Honours degree in the university.
While students who take FVPA, and our other courses, do not have to be arts practitioners, the subjects we offer include opportunities to work collaboratively and individually on exciting creative projects. Our courses incorporate field trips, playful experimentation, multi-media learning, and exposure to a network of leading practitioners and theorists.
FVPA courses bring students into dialogue with peers, ideas, and practices across the creative industries including film and television, theatre and performance, game design, music, fine arts, and cultural policy and management. Through this collaboration with colleagues across WSOA and the and students across the Faculty of Humanities, the IACS undergraduate programme creates pathways to postgraduate studies and diverse career opportunities.
