City Life in a Pandemic?

The 足球竞彩app排名 pandemic has undoubtedly prompted new thinking and practice around ordinary people’s living conditions. In this webinar we think through how the pandemic has impacted concepts of space and/or spatiality. Introduced to The City Lockdown Diaries we are taken through diaries collected over the period of the lockdown and are offered a unique lens on the diverse and interconnected challenges that affected residents during this period, including the socio-spatial differentiation in the experience of lockdown, insights on mobility, neighbourhood dynamics, policing, mental health and wellness. We also reflect on the architectural and spatial planning initiatives by the state, urban practitioners, and ordinary people. Reflecting on how the responses by local managers and urban practitioners to ordinary people’s housing, planning, and livelihood initiatives can contribute to the creation of an egalitarian city – a city that enhances ordinary people’s socio-economic gains and their adaptability to health, environmental, economic and political crises.

Dr. Ngaka Mosiane

Ngaka Mosiane is a Senior Researcher at the Gauteng City-Region Observatory. His object of study is the Gauteng City-Region, particularly its edges and adjoining areas. His research focuses on social payments and spatial interventions by the state and private sector, reflecting on how they enable and/or hinder ordinary people’s livelihood initiatives and aspirations. Ngaka’s research interests also include the history and major dimensions of informal housing; its current emphasis and future directions in theory and methodology.

Miriam Maina

Miriam Maina is an urban researcher, GIS and spatial analytics consultant. My work focuses on the use of social and geospatial data, analytics, illustration, and story-telling to document and analyze urban growth and development in support of policymaking in African towns and cities. Using maps, data stories, art, and analytics, I analyze and document: urban growth; the intentions, actions, and outcomes of public sector plans, policies, and investments; and the coordination of multi-stakeholder investment in pursuit of equitable urban development. My specific interest is in housing and human settlements, informal settlements upgrading, and spatial and economic development. I am a postdoctoral fellow at the NRF Chair in Spatial Analysis & City Planning at the University of the Witwatersrand. I have also worked at the Centre for Affordable Housing in Africa (CAHF), as a Research Manager, and a GIS and Spatial Analytics Consultant, and at the Centre for Urban Innovations at the University of Nairobi.



Feroza Motara

Dr Feroza Motara is a healthcare practitioner, specialising in Emergency Medicine. Dr Motara is the Academic Head of Division Emergency Medicine at faculty of health at the University of the Witwatersrand. The unit comprises Adult and Paediatric Emergency areas, a short stay clinical decision unit, the hospital staff clinic and a Triage area. Dr Motara has a keen interest in the impact that Point of Care has had on Emergency Medicine. She is also the head of units, Emergency Departments at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, responsible for the academic, clinical and administrative activities in the unit. The unit comprises Adult and Paediatric Emergency areas, a short stay clinical decision unit, the hospital staff clinic and a Triage area. Dr Motara has a keen interest in the impact that Point of Care has had on Emergency Medicine.
