Law Theory for Interpreters

Brush up on your knowledge of South African Law

This course aims to equip aspiring court interpreters with the required law theory so that they are able to work professionally in legal contexts with a full understanding of the legal implications of their actions.  The course examines the court process as a whole: evidence, jurisdiction, criminal and civil court procedure, elements of a crime and many other important aspects of the legal system. This knowledge, along with the associated terminology, is crucial for the court interpreter.

Course Fee

The course costs R8 350.

Classes are subject to a minimum of 8 students. We reserve the right not to run a particular course in an intake if there is insufficient demand. 

Duration

The course is part-time and runs for 8 weeks (40 hours) 

Qualification

Participants who meet all minimum requirements for the course are awarded a certificate of competence.

Programme Overview

Law theory for Interpreters is offered as a stand-alone course. This course equips learners with an overview of the South African Legal system. The criminal and civil court procedure and the role of the interpreter in each setting is presented in a way that is useful for the court interpreter. The course also focusses on the acts that interpreters most commonly encounter: The basic conditions of employment act, the labour relations act and the criminal procedure act. General legal principles pertinent to court interpreting are addressed.

This course is presented online and has no face-to-face sessions.

Entry Requirements

Please ensure you meet the following requirements when applying for the course: 

-Grade 12 or equivalent (approved by SAQA).
-Fluent English.
-Basic computer literacy.
-Successful completion of Introduction to Interpreting Skills
