Introduction to Interpreting Skills

Interpreting is more than just speaking two languages, it is an acquired skill that is exciting to learn. Join us for the next course.

This course is offered at NQF level 5 and aims to equip students with no prior formal interpreting training with interpreting skills at a community-based level, as well as to enhance linguistic and cultural knowledge and improve their ability to reflect on the process of interpreting in the South African context.

Course Fee

The course costs R12 350.

Classes are subject to a minimum of 8 students. We reserve the right not to run a particular course in an intake if there is insufficient demand. 

Duration

This course runs for 8 weeks (40 hours)

Qualification

Participants who meet all minimum requirements for the course are awarded a certificate of competence. 

Programme Overview

Introduction to Interpreting skills can be taken as a stand-alone course.

This course allows students to build on the necessary skill set that is required to specifically enhance their language proficiency within their mother tongue language. This will enhance their capabilities to provide adequate interpreting skills by equipping learners with some basic memorization techniques, better note-taking and trains them in the art of managing speech turns in interpreting situations.

This course is presented in a blended learning format. This means that the course has an online component as well as face-to-face sessions, from 09:00 - 15:30 daily. 

Entry Requirements

Please ensure you meet the following requirements when applying for the course: 

  • Grade 12 or equivalent (approved by SAQA).
  • Fluent English.
  • Fluent in at least one other language.
  • Basic computer literacy.
Career Opportunities

Having successfully completed this course provides the skills to work as an entry-level interpreter in community-based settings.  It also opens up further study opportunities in interpreting.
