The Wits Sport Hub

Situated on the Education Campus, this area is well positioned next to the swimming pool, Astro turf, running track and cricket field. It hosts the Wits Sport Clinic servicing the universities athletes and students and training physiotherapists in sports injury management. There are ambitious plans to expand the area into a vibrant hub which will serve a broader range of athletes and act as a training centre for postgraduate sports medicine.

The Wits Sport Clinic  operates within the School of Therapeutic Sciences and is part of Wits Sport and Health (WiSH). It is located at the Wits Education Campus (Impilo block), Parktown. The clinic provides a high standard of medical and rehabilitation services to all athletes and the general population suffering from musculoskeletal and other related conditions. Service providers include sports and exercise physicians, physiotherapists, biokineticists, optometrists, massage therapists, dieticians and podiatrists. The practice is open for consultation from Monday to Friday between 08h00 and 17h00. Appointments can also be made for external clients on weekends.

Sports Medicine Services

Sport Medicine Services offered at WISH:

Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) Physicians are involved in the following:

  • the promotion and implementation of regular physical activity in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of the patient in terms of his/her chronic disease-related  lifestyle;
  • the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries that occur during physical activity;
  • the prevention, diagnosis and management of medical conditions that occur during or after physical activity.1

Physiotherapy

Sports Physiotherapy is a branch of physiotherapy that focuses on the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of neuromusculoskeletal (NMS) sports-related conditions. A sports physiotherapist addresses the athletes’ impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions. He/she also becomes involved in injury prevention, sports performance and health promotion.

Biokinetics

Biokinetics is a controlled and professionally-guided exercise regime focusing on the optimisation of muscle, tendon and joint function. Under the guidance of a trained biokineticist, sportsmen/women are trained to ensure optimal biomechanics to recover from or prevent injury.

The WiSH Network

During 2020, WiSH has established 26 interest groups each led by an expert in that area. Over time it is planned that these will expand into specialist referral centres. The interest groups hold regular meetings at which interesting cases are presented, research articles analysed and clinicians are updated on best practice. The CMJAH Knee and Sports Medicine Unit

The CMJAH Knee and sports medicine unit provides access to non-medical aid patients with knee and sports injuries. It is staffed by excellent Orthopaedic specialists and is a training unit for fellows and registrars specialising through the University of Witwatersrand. We have support from all industry leaders ensuring word class care.

You can access our clinic by referral from a GP, physio or anyone on the WISH network or alternatively send an email to the address below and we will assist you.

The Linksfield Orthopaedic Sports Rehabilitation Clinic

The Linksfield Orthopaedic Sport and Rehabilitation unit has been managing sports and Orthopaedic conditions for over 25 years. Our team consists of Orthopaedic Surgeons specializing in Shoulder and Elbow (Dr Kastanos and Dr Cable), Hands (Dr Muller), Knee (Prof Firer, Dr Gelbart and Dr Street) and Soft tissue (Dr Gelbart and Street), Foot, and Ankle surgery (Prof Saragas and Dr Ferrao).

They are backed up by a rehabilitation team of Physiotherapists from the practice of Leicher, Speechly, Davidson and Partners.

Our hand therapy is seen to by our Occupational therapists Evanthi Pavli and Roxanne Wentzel.

Once you have returned to good physiology, our Biokinetics team headed by Gareth Devine will optimise your sports performance.

The Centre for Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics

The Centre for Sports Medicine was established in 1996 to focus exclusively on sports medicine. However, the need for a wider range of orthopaedic and allied specialists catering for a broader section of the public very soon became evident and the facility has expanded to offer a range of services in musculoskeletal medicine.
