English Studies
The Department teaches literary fiction, poetry, and plays from the English speaking world.
Curriculum Overview
The first-year course includes the study of literatures from across the English speaking world including India, South African, America, and the United Kingdom. From the beginning of second-year, we adopt ‘contrapuntal’ approach to teaching that allows us to engage with both the traditional English canon and various counter canonical and contemporary literary alternatives. Starting with Medieval literature, we cover the literary productions of the Renaissance, the Eighteenth Century, and Romanticism, and, in third-year, Realism, Modernism, Postmodernism and, and Postcolonialism.
In each period, we consider the ways in which contemporary writers from various contexts have engaged the British and American traditions.
Our curriculum is not traditional in the mundane sense of the word but considers the ongoing dialogue between tradition and innovation, and the conversation among European, colonial and postcolonial writers.
Programme Outcomes
By the end of the programme graduates have developed, sophisticated reading, writing and critical thinking skills.
