  • The SCIS is currently undertaking the following research and policy projects, which examine specific areas relating to inequality in South Africa and the global South. 

  • Our work is based on four key approaches: Identifying how inequality shapes the economy and society; understanding power relations and their role in inequality; imagining fairer power structures for greater equality; and developing research and policies for inclusive growth.

The current inequality emergency is a policy choice

The Southern Centre for Inequality Studies (SCIS) welcomes the release of the recently released G20 Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts’ Report on Global Inequality.  The committee unveiled the first-ever report on inequality to the G20 on 4 November 2025. As the Director of SCIS, a Centre established to undertake research on the growing levels of inequality across the world, especially in the global South, it is an honour to serve as a member of the Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts on Global Inequality, commissioned by President Cyril Ramaphosa for South Africa’s Presidency of the G20.
