Inequality is a persistent social and economic issue, especially in the global South. The Southern Centre for Inequality Studies (SCIS) aims to understand and tackle this inequality through interdisciplinary research, emphasising collaboration and intersectionality.

Our work is based on four key approaches: Identifying how inequality shapes the economy and society; understanding power relations and their role in inequality; Imagining fairer power structures for greater equality; and developing research and policies for inclusive growth.

SCIS also offers research-led teaching, including an MCom in Inequality Studies, PhD and Post-doctoral fellowships, the Cameron Schrier Equality Fellowship, and an internship programme.

The SCIS’s overall aim is to understand inequality, which is detrimental to people’s wellbeing. The SCIS uses participatory action research, dialogue, socially engaged research and advocacy as vehicles for influencing in pursuit of improving the wellbeing of people.
