Division of Immunology

Immunology is a core scientific discipline that is increasingly recognized as essential to all areas of medicine. At the University of the Witwatersrand, the Division of Immunology operates within the School of Pathology and holds joint status with the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS).

Division of Immunology envisions an Africa where all people including those with immune deficiencies can access quality care, recover and thrive. Our mission is to provide innovative immunology diagnostics, training and research, strengthening clinical and scientific capacity, towards improved health outcomes.

Led by Dr Christina Thobakgale, the division focuses on advancing the understanding of immune-related diseases, particularly within African populations. It aims to strengthen South Africa’s clinical and scientific capacities to improve health outcomes.

“We are shaping the next generation of African immunologists, fostering collaboration, and advancing research that leads to innovative diagnostics and treatments for improved healthcare outcomes”.

Dr Christina Thobakgale, Head of Division

The division’s interdisciplinary approach integrates advanced research, comprehensive training, and strategic partnerships to drive progress in immunology and expand healthcare access for underserved communities.
