Postgraduate Studies
The Department of Oral Pathology offers two master’s degree programmes:
Master of Science in Dentistry (Oral Pathology)
This is a two year part time degree programme offered by coursework and research. The coursework comprises applied general pathology, anatomy, physiology and a research study in Oral Pathology.
Master of Dentistry in the branch of Oral Pathology
This is a five year specialisation degree programme for individuals wishing to practice as Oral Pathologists. The first two years are spent on rotation in the Department of Anatomical Pathology and the last three in the Department of Oral Pathology. The program encompasses diagnostic oral and maxillofacial histopathology, correlation of clinical, pathological and radiological features of oral and maxillofacial diseases, research methods, both clinic-pathological and experimental. The Oral Pathology registrar training program is also designed to meet the certification requirements of the Fellowship of the College of Pathology of South Africa [FCPath (SA)], and includes integrated didactic and practical instruction in oral and maxillo-facial, head and neck pathology. A minor dissertation is a requirement for conferment of the degree. Candidates sit for a unitary exit examination with the South African College of Pathologists;?FCPath (SA) Oral. Applied Pathology for Dentists (OPAT7010A)
An applied general pathology course offered in partial fulfilment towards the following degrees:
- Master of Dentistry degree in the branches of Oral Medicine and Periodontology, Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery, Prosthodontics and Orthodontics.
- Master of Science in Dentistry in the fields of Oral Medicine, Maxillofacial and Oral Radiology, Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery, Restorative Dentistry, Implantology and Paedodontology.
Oral Pathology (OPAT7015A, OPAT7024A, OPAT7026A) for MDent (Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery, MDent (Oral Medicine and Periodontology), MDent (Orthodontics) and MDent (Prosthodontics)
These courses provide registrars in the specialties of maxillofacial and oral surgery, oral medicine and periodontology, orthodontics and prosthodontics with in-depth understanding of the aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, treatment, prognosis of pertinent diseases of the oral and maxillofacial region and the knowledge to formulate differential diagnoses and refer appropriately.
