History

The Department of General Dental Practice was introduced at the Witwatersrand Faculty of Health Sciences, School Oral Health Sciences in 2011. The objective of the Department was to establish an integrated curriculum that aligns with the international trends of training and educating the 21st century Oral Health Care workforce to meet the oral health needs of the population and produce graduates who will make meaningful contribution to the. society.

The application of this pedagogy model is to prepare competent general dental practitioners who will be able to manage patients in a comprehensive patient care system. This leads to teaching dental practice as an integral part of the larger health education and sets delivery systems that encourage lifelong learners towards continuous professional development in dentistry advancing as a “learned” profession.

The educators in the Department are committed to excellence in improving oral and systemic health through improved access to care by using advance and modern technology, research and education which is recognized nationally and internationally.

We continuously encourage the implementation of evidence-based and patient centered clinical practices in comprehensive clinical dentistry. We further assure optimum standards of oral and dental health care based on biomechanical and aesthetic rationalism for complete patient satisfaction and welfare.
