General Dental Practice

The Department provides academic programmes and clinical services collaboratively with other departments and divisions at Wits Oral Health Centre and School of Oral Health Sciences including integration with other health science disciplines in the Faculty of Health Sciences. We are committed to excellence in improving oral and systemic health through improved access to care, innovation, research and education which is recognized nationally and internationally. The Department of General Dental Practice began in January 2012. It is an integrated department consisting of the following modules:

  • Comprehensive Patient Care
  • Dental Practice Management
  • Maxillo-Facial and Oral Radiology

Academic /Lecturer or Clinical supervisor with special interest in Ethics and Health Law, Healthcare Management, Dental Psychology, Maxillofacial and Oral Radiology and Dental Education. Dental Practice Management   

The Dental Practice Management will provide you with an opportunity as oral health care professional to gain a better understanding of the current competitive dental-practice environment and all relevant topics ranging from the economy, ethics and leadership to entrepreneurship, social media, branding and stress management. Understanding the Developments in the National Health Insurance (NHI) arena and   ethical pitfalls for the oral health care practitioner and enhance the quality and cooperation of dental team.  

Comprehensive Patient Care  

Exposing students at the clinical level of the dental program to a variety of cases across various clinical specialties to enhances their clinical experiences and augments their clinical skills and decision-making abilities. Implementing evidence-based and patient centered clinical practices in comprehensive clinical dentistry which will assures optimum standards of oral and dental health care based on biomechanical and esthetic rationalism for complete patient satisfaction and welfare 

Maxillo-Facial and Oral Radiology 

Acquire knowledge in different radiology modalities, skills in the application of advanced radiology technology and interpretation. Comprehensively follow cases from clinical and radiographic presentation through direct interaction with referring clinical departments. Participate in teaching dental students in the undergraduate Radiology Clinic and present seminars and cases to academic research forums. 

Dental Education 

The course will develop the skills, practices and enhance the capacity to fulfil educational role(s) in dental and other healthcare education contexts. These will further improve your knowledge to respond to current and future developments in educational policies and practices
