Five new members elected to Convocation

University’s statutory body reveals results from latest election to its executive committee.

Convocation of the University of the Witwatersrand ran an election between 20-24 November 2023 to elect five new members to Convocation’s Executive Committee. A record number of 19 nominees stood in the election and more than 10 000 votes were cast.

Elected members are:

2023 Exco elected members

  • Eunice Cross (BA 2001, BA Hons 2003, LLB 2003, LLM 2011, PhD 2023) – founder and director at legal consultancy EC Advisory;
  • Lesley-Anne Gatter (BA 1996, BA Hons 1997, MA 2007) – head of people at Investec, specialising in learning and development;
  • Adam Levin (BA 1996, LLB 1998) – corporate and commercial attorney at Saltzman Attorneys and Notaries;
  • Craig Sampson (BSc Eng 2002) – managing director for development company SafetyIO; and
  • Tebogo Thothela (BCom 2015, LLB 2017, LLM 2021) – parliamentary counsellor to the Gauteng Premier and director of strategic support to the Director General of the province. 

The new members’ term will run from 1 January 2024 till 31 December 2026.

"Congratulations to all newly elected members. Thank you to everyone who stood for the election and thank you to everyone who voted," said senior liaison officer Heather Bangwayo. "We are encouraged and excited to see alumni votes grow with each election. This shows rising levels of engagement and interest from our alumni.”

Convocation is a statutory body and the name given to the University’s largest constituency – its alumni. Over 200 000 graduates, Wits academic staff, and retired academics with 10 consecutive years’ service to the University make up Convocation. Convocation is guided by legislation, Wits Statute and the Wits Rules. The body enables alumni to have a say in University matters, ensuring that the quality and reputation of their Wits qualification is maintained and strengthened.
