Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng (BEd 1993, MEd 1996, PhD 2002), former President of Wits Convocation and founding director of the Marang Centre for Mathematics and Science Education, is to be the new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town, succeeding fellow Witsie Dr Max Price (MBBCh 1979, DOH 1993). The Daily Maverick outlines some of the issues she will face in the role.

Ciko Thomas (MBA 2002) is the managing executive of retail and business banking at Nedbank. He spoke to Business Day about his surprising career path and the value of mentorship.

Margeaux Adams (BArch 2014, BArch Hons 2017, MArch  2018) is the regional winner of the Corobrik Architectural 足球竞彩app排名 of the Year Awards. Her research, through a case study of the small Anglican mission settlement of Abbotsdale (a community of former slaves), “intends to deconstruct harmful and inaccurate ideas of cultural superiority and its embodiment in our spatial landscapes”.

Nonku Ntshona (PGDipPDM 2007, MSc Build 2013) told the Sunday Times about her career as a quantity surveyor.

Dr Sivuyile Madikana (MBBCh 2012, MBA 2017)  received the Health Excellence Special Award at the second Gauteng Premier Youth Excellence and Service Awards, for his innovative use of social media to spread health information. He is now a UN policy advisor in New York. GQ magazine spoke to him about his work – and his style!

Gareth van Onselen (BA 1998, BA Hons 1999, MA 2001) is the new Head of Politics and Governance at the South African Institute for Race Relations.

Barbara Lindop (BA Hons 1983) received the insignia of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres (Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters) from the Ambassador of France to South Africa.
