Opinion: SA’s soldiers in C.A.R – Three alumni perspectives
- By Deborah Minors
The death of 13 South African soldiers in the Central African Republic on 26 March caused a national outcry and raised questions around South Africa’s presence in the C.A.R, whom our soldiers were defending, and why. Amidst the finger pointing, subterfuge, allegations and conflicting statements, three alumni provide alternative perspectives: Andrew Treu (BSc, 1982) explains why he resigned his membership of the South African National Defence Force Union in direct response to the Union’s handling of the C.A.R incident. Defence expert, John Stupart (MA International Relations, 2010) outlines the three things that C.A.R taught us, while Attorney Dario Milo (LLM, 1997) explores national security versus freedom of speech. |
