Anatomy of an Australian alumnus

Australia is the third most populous Witsie country outside of South Africa. According to the Wits alumni database, almost 1% of Wits graduates reside in Australia. This represents 1 828 alumni out of a total of 120 810 living alumni. The USA has the highest number of expatriate Wits graduates (1.42%), followed by the UK (1.2%). Canada is a distant fourth at 0.47%.* Wits international alumni by country These figures correspond with (but are slightly lower than) those on the popular career networking site, LinkedIn. This site recently introduced an alumni application that allows you to segment alumni by location, profession and employer and then view individual profiles. The application is therefore an ideal tool for finding classmates for a reunion, or Witsies living in a particular town or city. Where do you live? More than 40 000 Witsies have a profile on LinkedIn, 2 530 of whom live in Australia. Sydney is home to almost half the Witsies living in Australia, followed by Melbourne, Perth, then Brisbane: What do you do? Banking and mining employers dominate in hiring Witsies in Australia who have profiles on LinkedIn. More than 200 of these Witsies work in finance, followed by administration and consultancy. More than 100 alumni work in IT, engineering or as entrepreneurs and in business development. Around 80 of these 200 alumni work in the medical sector. The remaining alumni profiled work in the legal sector and in HR, sales, marketing, PR and creative industries. Most Witsies in Brisbane work in administration, consultation or engineering. Most Witsies in Canberra - more than 800 - work in HR, followed by 700-odd in operations, and accounting/legal respectively. Around 500 work in marketing and PR respectively. Most LinkedIn Witsies living in Melbourne work in finance or administration, or in IT or as consultants. Witsies in Perth work mainly in engineering, administration or finance. Witsie Sydneysiders dominate in numbers in Australia. They mainly work in finance, IT or consulting. More than 50 are entrepreneurs or administrators, while 20 to 30 work in engineering or the medical sector.
