Witsies appointed to the Presidential Economic Advisory Council

Two Wits academics and several alumni are among the economic thought leaders appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Witsies appointed to the 7th Presidential Economic Advisory Council - Professor Imraan Valodia, Dr Kenneth Creamer and Ms Trudy Makhaya

The President announced members of the Presidential Economic Advisory Council (PEAC) who will play an important role in guiding the 7th Administration in its pursuit of rapid, inclusive and sustainable economic growth and job creation.

Comprising local and international economic thought leaders, the Council advises the President and government more broadly, helping the development and implementation of economic policies that spur inclusive growth.

Witsies appointed to PEAC include Dr Kenneth Creamer, Senior Lecturer in the School of Economics and Finance; Professor Imraan Valodia, Pro Vice-Chancellor: Climate, Sustainability and Inequality, and Director of the Southern Centre for Inequality Studies.

Wits alumni in this critical Council include Ms Trudy Makhaya, former economic advisor to the President and  Senior Advisor at the Boston Consulting Group, Professor Alan Hirsch, Emeritus Professor at The Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance at UCT and founding director of the School, Mr Kuben Naidoo was until recently a Deputy Governor of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) and a member of the Monetary Policy Committee. He is the head of corporate payment channels at Investec and, Prof. Fiona Tregenna, the DST/NRF South African Research Chair in Industrial Development at the University of Johannesburg.

The Council is a non-statutory and independent body chaired by the President and brings together prominent economists and technical experts drawn from academia, the private sector, labour, community, think tanks and other constituencies. The members, who volunteer their time, are appointed for the term of the 7th Administration (5 years), said the Presidency in a statement
