Wits surgeon a cut above

Dr Thifheli Luvhengo is a Lecturer and the Clinical Head of the Department of Surgery at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

Dr Luvhengo’s research focuses on thyroid pathologies and his other interests are in medical education, including training and assessment, surgical endocrinology, and research into soft tissue cancers.

A medical doctor by training, Dr Luvhengo is, or has been, a member of the College of Surgeons of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa, the Association of Surgeons of South Africa, the Surgical Research Society of Southern Africa, the South African Gastroenterological Society, and the South African Medical Association.

Prior to joining Wits, Dr Luvhengo served as the Clinical Head of Department of Surgery and as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Pretoria and as the Clinical Head of the Department of Surgery at the Kalafong Provincial Academic Hospital.

Dr Luvhengo is widely published, is the recipient of several awards, and a member of a number of sector committees.

At Wits, Dr Luvhengo served as a member of Council and a member of the Senate. He served as an Adjunct Professor at Wits and as Principal Specialist and Head of General Surgery at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital from 2011 to 2013.

He previously worked in different capacities in several other hospitals in Witbank, Pietersburg and Ga-Rankuwa.
