Professor Shabir Madhi

Professor Shabir Madhi has established an internationally recognised research unit in the field of epidemiology and vaccine preventable diseases.  

Madhi, from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases focusses his research on the leading causes of pneumonia, diarrhoea and neonatal sepsis, which together account for one-third of all under-five childhood deaths globally. His research includes studies on vaccination strategies targeted at pregnant women.

He has received multiple awards, including the National Science and Technology Forum’s TW Kambule Award: Senior Black Researcher over the past 5–10 years; NRF Award for Transformation of the Science Cohort; Medical Research Council Lifetime Achievement Award (Platinum Medal) and European &  Developing Countries Clinical Trial Partnership Scientific Leadership Award.
