Witsie awarded the prestigious Abe Bailey Bursary

Kamogelo Mabe, a 23-year-old Honours student in Critical Diversity Studies, has been awarded the prestigious Abe Bailey Travel Bursary for 2024.

The Abe Bailey Travel Bursary is awarded to outstanding South African students or young professionals who demonstrate exceptional leadership qualities, academic excellence, and a commitment to the future of the country. The bursary offers recipients an opportunity to participate in a three-week educational and cultural tour of the United Kingdom, fostering understanding, goodwill, and collaboration between South Africa and the UK.

Mabe’s journey exemplifies a blend of academic excellence, leadership, and a profound commitment to societal impact. After graduating with a Bachelor of Education, he redirected his academic focus towards diversity studies, showcasing his adaptability and dedication to addressing South Africa’s pressing issues.

In 2022, he was instrumental in developing an action plan to establish a library at Ibhongo Primary School, an initiative aimed at improving literacy skills. His ability to engage with complex societal challenges demonstrates his alignment with the holistic leadership ethos of the Abe Bailey Bursary.

Mabe’s leadership journey is equally noteworthy. Serving as Deputy President and Acting President of the 足球竞彩app排名 Representative Council (SRC) during 2022/2023, he made significant contributions to student governance. He is also a co-founder of the Mzanzi Youth Enrichment Foundation, a volunteer at the Sophiatown Parliamentary Constituency Office, and an active facilitator of Green Campus Initiatives within the Residence Life Unit.

Balancing these responsibilities, Mabe has consistently excelled academically, earning numerous Certificates of First Class. He was also part of the Wits Election Observer Group, contributing to the success of national and provincial elections as an official observer.

This accolade reflects his alignment with the values of the Abe Bailey Travel Bursary, which emphasises leadership, academic distinction, and a commitment to South Africa’s future.

Mabe has joined other recipients of the Abe Bailey Travel Bursary on a journey to the United Kingdom from 26 November to 17 December 2024. This experience will provide him with valuable opportunities for networking, cultural exchange, and leadership development.
