Outstanding matriculants, now Wits students receive Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Awards, which covers full tuition fees.
Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Wits University, Professor Zeblon Vilakazi hosted the recipients of the 2023 Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Awards.
The scholarship is an esteemed award given to the top 20 deserving students, who topped the academic charts in the national senior certificate exams and are currently doing their first year at Wits University.

This fully funded scholarship acknowledges academic excellence, hard work, and resilience. It provides relief to students and their families from the financial burden associated with pursuing a university degree.
For Mihlali Zokufa, a BSc Actuarial Science student from Zimele High School in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, says “receiving the scholarship was a significant motivation to join Wits University”. Zokufa got seven distinctions in his grade 12 and aims to establish a manufacturing business focusing on robotics after completing his tertiary studies.
“Congratulations, you are the top 20 students from the over 5000 first year students who are enrolled at Wits,” said Vilakazi. “Wits is an excellent university it is home to four Nobel prize-winners, and it is ranks among the top 100 institutions whose alumni go on to become CEOs. These are the shoulders you stand upon, the shoulders of giants. Take up the baton to excel and push beyond your boundaries,” Vilakazi added.
Accepting the challenge, Franco Vosloo, an MBBCh student wants to be a paediatric surgeon in the public sector, said: “I am passionate about paediatrics, and I want to work in public health so I can assist in providing better public health to patients.”
The ceremony was held on Sunday, 02 April 2023. Parents, school teacher and principals as well as Wits University staff came together to celebrate the recipients and their achievements. The group of students is highly interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, as evidenced by their course registrations. Among the students, eight are studying medicine, seven are pursuing actual sciences, two are focusing on computer science, two are studying engineering, and one is studying accounting science.
Wits University offers a range of scholarships and bursaries to matriculants including the University Entrance Scholarship, the Vice-Chancellor’s Equality Scholarships, and the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Awards were created to motivate and reward top matriculants.
