John-Orr Memorial Lecture
This lecture was established in 1961 to honour Professor John Orr, a pioneering engineer and former Head of Mechanical Engineering at Wits. Recognised as one of South Africa’s most prestigious engineering lectures, it continues to celebrate excellence, innovation, and thought leadership.
Hosted by the Wits School of Engineering in collaboration with SAIMechE on 24 October 2025, this year's event features Mr Neal Froneman, Wits Mechanical Engineering alumnus with 35+ years in mining and engineering.

Neal Froneman is one of South Africa’s most influential engineering and business leaders. A proud Wits Mechanical Engineering graduate, he brings over 35 years of experience in mining and engineering.
As a former CEO of Sibanye-Stillwater, he transformed a South African gold producer into a diversified global mining powerhouse—renowned for innovation, sustainability, and creating shared value.
