Overview: Given the challenges around digital colonisation, citizens need to be active participants in the digital transformation  ecosystem.  Kgopotso’s research suggests that communities must be at the centre of digital transformation. This implies that they need to own infrastructure and create digital solutions that are capable of responding to their local needs, informed by their cultural framework/s.

Speaker bio
Kgopotso Ditshego Magoro is a Wits LINK Centre PhD candidate in the Interdisciplinary Digital Knowledge Economy Studies programme. Magoro's doctoral research focuses on cultural knowledge  systems, practices and processes of rural communities as the foundation for culturally embedded digital transformation. Magoro applies the philosophy of Mandhwane (learning by doing) in her action research as an alternative approach to community-based digital transformation. Her research into Digital Mandhwane has led to the establishment of a Community Computer Solar Lab and Mamaila Community Network, a WiFi project implemented in partnership with the Mamaila Tribal Authority and the Zuri Foundation, South Africa. Magoro works as the Learning and Innovation Manager at the South African National Treasury in Pretoria, and holds a Wits Master of Management degree in the field of ICT Policy and Regulation (MM ICTPR).
