Social Theory is a short course for trade unionists and labour activists living and working in South Africa. The aim of the course is to help participants develop the capacity for critical thinking and to engage analytically about labour and labour-related issues. The primary goal is to assist students in their critical thinking and ability to analyse the complex world in which their unions and worker organisations operate. The certificate course addresses key debates in political economy, development, democracy, labour (and the various forms of work and workers), as well as systemic alternatives. Modules are taught by experienced teaching staff from the University of the Witwatersrand and other guest lecturers.
On completion of the course, participants should be able to:
- Apply conceptual and analytical frameworks in developing union analyses and strategy;
- Lead relevant discussions, collect information, analyse problems, make judgements based on analysis, and effectively communicate them; and
- Develop individual capacity and competence in academic reading and analysis.
The course is divided into four themed modules:
1) Global Capitalism and African Political Economy
2) Labour, Development, and Democracy
3) Systemic Alternatives
4) Workers, Vulnerable Workers, and Labour Migration
Each module focuses on trade unions and their engagements on each of these themes. In addition, each module integrates themes of gender, ecology, international solidarity, and trade union strategy. Each theme will highlight strategic approaches by trade unions.
Target Group
Labour activists and trade unionists from all federations, unions, and worker organisations in South Africa are encouraged to apply. In some years, the course is run by invitation only in order to target participants working in a particular sector or issue (e.g., energy).
Practical Considerations
Classes run from 08h30-17h00 each day as set by the Module Coordinators. Group-work projects may also be set by Module Coordinators outside class time. Attendance to the full course is mandatory for certification.

ENGAGE Programme South Africa - Union Rights, Policy and Practice: Training for Global Union Activists
Engage is a two-month short course training programme for participants from Africa, Asia, Latin America, North America and Europe held annually at Wits University. Courses are taught by experienced teaching staff from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and other guest lecturers.
Workers in both the formal and informal economies, as well as trade unions, are faced with rapid economic and social change. As yet, adequate regulatory and protective frameworks have not been found to meet the challenges imposed by the varying forces of globalisation. The current world economic and ecological crises urgently require the development of alternative policies and rules based on universal human rights, international social justice, ecological development and democratic self-determination. However, to turn these policies and rules into reality a strong voice representing the interests of workers is needed.
Engage helps labour activists and trade unionists to acquire additional knowledge and tools enabling them to take an active part in public debate and the process of policy formulation and implementation. The Certificate Course has six modules and a joint research project. The cause of the decade-long decline in the wage share and the requirements for a wage-led recovery path will be discussed and analysed during the training. The participants will jointly develop strategies to enforce decent work conditions along cross-national chains of production and to regulate financial markets in a way that promotes fair globalisation and inclusive societies. In addition, each module integrates themes of gender, ecology, international solidarity, and trade union strategy. Participants are also exposed to practical skills of PowerPoint presentations, developing graphs, and research methods.

Target Group
Engage specifically seeks participants who are labour activists and trade unionists from Africa, Asia, Latin and North America and Europe. The international nature of the Engage course makes it a truly unique international experience that offers new opportunities for global networking. A key feature of Engage is the lasting friendships amongst participants created by the intimate and intensive nature of the course as well as, importantly, the strong cross-border links and solidarity between workers’ organisations represented by the participants.
