The DFO, which includes the Australia, UK and US offices, is responsible for activities that advance the fundraising arm of the University by engaging with corporates, trusts and foundations, government and individual donors.   • The Rhisotope Project successfully treated 29 rhinos with radioisotopes to protect them against poaching.

    Wits Rhisotope Project - Saving Our Rhinos

    Wildlife crime ranks among the four major black-market crimes globally. Professor James Larkin and his Wits team have developed an innovative nuclear science solution to save rhinos from extinction. By inserting measured quantities of radioisotopes into live rhino horns, this non-lethal approach aims to radically reduce end-user demand. Radioactive horns become less desirable commodities and are more easily detected at international borders, exposing smuggling syndicates to prosecution under anti-terrorism laws.

    Next Generation Geosciences

    The Wits School of Geosciences, Africa's largest Earth Science institution, has shaped Southern African societies for over 120 years. They're establishing the Next Generation Geoscience Endowment Fund to attract top scientists and train students in critical skills. Plans include modernising the Geosciences Centre into a net-zero building and developing a state-of-the-art Geoscience Exploratorium housing Wits' extensive specimen library, transforming public perceptions of geoscience impact globally.

    Wits H₂O Institute - Water Research

    South Africa's water resources face extreme pressure from climate change, population growth, deindustrialisation, and poor infrastructure maintenance. Wits H₂O conducts blue sky, applied, and public-facing research providing non-partisan, evidence-based policy guidance for civil society, industry, and government. Their mandate includes industry engagement, curriculum transformation, municipal training, modelling, township planning, and cross-disciplinary water research spanning natural, technical, and societal domains.

    Wits MIND Institute

    Launched in November 2024, the Institute promotes breakthrough AI research and technology innovation. The Institute brings together interdisciplinary teams across computer science, neuroscience, psychology, archaeology, anthropology, philosophy, and policy to advance understanding of natural and artificial intelligence. Through industry partnerships with companies like Investec and IBM, it develops high-value technologies, including large-scale AI models for material science, drug design, astronomy, and business intelligence, while fostering commercialisation and innovation.
