Climate change threatens human rights and survival worldwide, creating new inequalities while worsening existing ones. Wits is tackling this crisis head-on through education that produces graduates equipped to find real solutions. Our conservation and environmental courses give students the expertise to address these complex challenges.
Here are a few of the programmes that Wits offers.
Climate Change and Me
Launched in 2022, Wits was the first institution to lead with a university-wide course aimed at responding to this global challenge. The course is the largest course by student numbers at Wits and is offered during the Gateway to Success orientation programme.
BSc in the field of Environmental Studies
Provides a cross-cutting and interdisciplinary science and social science education, focusing on the historical and contemporary issues facing southern Africa, including climate and environmental change, resource management, environmental justice and sustainability.
BSc in the field of Biological Sciences
Offered by the School of Animal, Plant and Environmental Sciences, this career line includes diverse training in ecology and conservation, which are sought-after skills in dealing with the interdisciplinary challenges faced by society.
Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning
In a context of rapid urbanisation, social transformation and a changing natural environment, Urban and Regional Planning is about efficient and effective space management and creating places with meaning and quality.
BCom Applied Development Economics major

BSc Hons, field of Environmental Studies
The Environmental Studies stream is one of the fastest-growing divisions in the School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies. The School hosts a highly skilled body of staff who are highly qualified in specialised fields.
BSc Hons field of Animal, Plant and Environmental Sciences
The School is home to several world leaders in sustainability, savannah ecology, among other research areas and includes a diverse, research-active and passionate staff and postgraduate cohort working on a variety of projects ranging from animal behaviour to plant systematics and evolution to ecology to aquatic ecology.
Energy Leadership
Master’s degree and a Postgraduate Diploma in the field of Energy Leadership, offered by the African Energy Leadership Centre (AELC) at the Wits Business School. A hub of teaching and research, the focus of the AELC is on the latest thinking and best practice in energy leadership.
Environmental Law
The Wits School of Law offers an LLM and PGDip specialisation in Environmental Law, covering aspects such as constitutional environmental rights, resource conservation laws, pollution control, and how environmental regulations are applied in practice.
