Computational and Applied Mathematics

The MSc by Research in Computational and Applied Mathematics offers an open ended research platform through which you may work with leading researchers in a number of computational and applied fields.

Overview

Computational and Applied Mathematics is the practice of employing mathematical techniques and approaches to the solution of real-world problems throughout STEM fields. The focus of the programme is to equip candidates with a set of tools for the interpretation, distillation and solution approach of a given problem. The tools covered in this programme focus on computational methods, mathematical modelling, optimisation and differential equations.

Many industrial sectors and occupations are heavily reliant on the ability to interpret problems and creatively meaningful solutions and analysis thereof. Industrial settings include but are not limited to, banking, quantitative finance, algorithmic trading, operations research, supply chain and mining.

You are trained as a researcher, allowing entrance into PhD programmes in Computational and Applied Mathematics, and are also expected to produce work of a high standard which can contribute to the field.

When you pursue an MSc by research, the topic that you will focus on will be formulated by you and your chosen supervisor. The wide variety of research interests in the School allows you to work on problems that you find interesting and which the broader community considers important.

Why study at Wits?

The School employs world leading researchers in the fields of continuum mechanics, partial differential equations, symmetry analysis, optimisation, financial modelling,  numerical methods and analysis and mathematical modelling. It is with this strength that we are able to offer a world-class education and skill-set, adequately preparing candidates for future endeavours.

Entry Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science Honours in a related field with a minimum weighted average of 65%.
  • A supervisor from the School must be identified and approached prior to application.

A candidate will only be accepted into the programme if a staff member has agreed to supervise their research. The onus is on the applicant to contact staff members working in fields of interest. Applicants are encouraged to contact the coordinator for assistance with this process.

University Application Process

  • Applications are handled centrally by the 足球竞彩app排名 Enrolment Centre (SEnC). Once your application is complete in terms of requested documentation, your application will be referred to the relevant School for assessment. Click here to see an overview of the Wits applications process.
