Translation and Interpreting Studies

The PhD is a degree that takes a minimum of 2 years full-time or maximum of 4 years part-time.

Overview


PhD students in Translation and Interpreting Studies seek to advance the state of knowledge in their field by gathering substantial data, evaluating theory and generating original research. Suitable supervision must be arranged within the School for PhD study, and this is a prerequisite for admission as a candidate.

Curriculum


There are no courses in this programme, as it is done entirely by research.

Entry Requirements


A Master of Arts degree (Translation and Interpreting Studies or equivalent) from Wits or another university, with a 70% aggregate pass mark.

All applicants are required to compile an entrance portfolio consisting of:

  • An academic transcript;
  • A statement of intent conceptualising the proposed research project.

There may be further assessments and/or interviews for applicants who perform satisfactorily in the entrance portfolio.

  • Applicants can monitor the progress of their applications via the Self Service Portal.
  • Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.
