The Master of Arts in the field of Portuguese Studies is only offered by Dissertation.
Overview
One of the most spoken languages in the world, Portuguese is a rich pluricentric language with a diverse set of variants which produces copious amounts of literature and culture to study. So, the masters´ dissertations on Portuguese aim to guide the students:
- To foster interdisciplinary connections to promote Portuguese language, literatures and cultures.
- To make students recognise Portuguese as a pluricentric language with multiple variations, whilst making them culturally aware of their distinct aspects.
- To conduct research in various spheres of Portuguese as a foreign language and second language.
- To provide students with proficiency in Portuguese as a foreign language and grant a master qualification to those who may wish to expand their linguistic and cultural knowledge in Portuguese.
- To cultivate the potential to pursue doctoral studies in Portuguese.

Curriculum
The Masters in Portuguese Studies is only offered by Dissertation. The programme in the field of Portuguese is a one-year full-time or two-year part-time degree.
Entry Requirements
- BA degree with Honours from Wits or another university with a 65% total mark aggregate.
- A supervisor from the must be identified and approached before application.
The department reserves the right to assess the applicant’s suitability to complete the degree. Research topics are chosen in conjunction with the supervisor and their areas of expertise.

Once your application is complete in terms of requested documentation, your application will be referred to the relevant School for assessment. - Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.
