Overview
This programme is aimed at teachers who have completed either a Bachelor of Education (BEd) with Science majors or a one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with a Science-based Bachelor's degree not in Education.
Our enrolment capacity is limited; please ensure your application is completed and submitted timeously. Applications that are late, incomplete or that do not meet the minimum academic requirements will not be considered.
The BEd Honours in Science Education degree has five-module honours programmes designed to enable students to:
- Strengthen practical professional competence in Science Education
- Engage critically with new educational reforms
- Strengthen Scientific knowledge and pedagogy, science enquiry, and reflective thinking
- Develop expertise in the Life Sciences or Physical Sciences roles of an educator.
The programme in the Science field comprises:
- Educational Theory, Research and Enquiry I - compulsory
- Key Issues in Science Education Research - compulsory
- Select one of the two modules - Life Sciences for Educators and/or Physical Sciences for Educators
- One module - Research Project in Science Education
- Research Design - compulsory
Not all specialism modules in the programme will be offered each year, depending on staff availability and student numbers.

Science Education consists of two optional modules offered and may differ from one year to the next.

Entry Requirements
- A Bachelor degree in Education, or a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with an overall average of 65% or more.
- The PGCE has to be accompanied by a Bachelor degree or B.Tech in the sciences.
For applicants with BEd degrees, please take note of the additional criteria:

- 60% or more in Education IV and 65% Being a Teacher, including:
- Senior Phase/Further Education and Training Teaching: 65% or more in either Life Sciences IV or Physical Sciences IV and Teaching Physical/Life Sciences.

Once your application is complete in terms of requested documentation, your application will be referred to the relevant School for assessment. - Applicants can monitor the progress of their applications via the Self Service Portal.
- Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.
