Medical Humanitarian Leadership

The Wits School of Public Health is offering a new Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health in the field of Medical Humanitarian Leadership.

Overview

Managers play a pivotal role in the quality of strategic planning and implementation in a medical humanitarian setting. It relies largely on the experience, skills and competencies of the managers in the field.

The scope of the response to medical crises is very wide (including advocacy, research and management of large teams) and it addresses a broad range of public health and medical domains (e.g. epidemiology, surgery, nutrition, sexual and reproductive health, mental health, etc.). Moreover, humanitarian contexts are complex requiring analytic skills as well as the ability to translate evidence into programmes. Programmes can suffer from the lack of strong management and leadership in the field, in all components of the project cycle which has a negative effect on outcomes.

By developing competencies and clarifying their role, managers can gain confidence in their position increase their performance thus contributing in improving the impact of the interventions on target populations. They also contribute to maintain a strong medical identity and legitimacy in medical humanitarian NGOs.

The Wits School of Public Health is a multi-disciplinary school producing skilled public health practitioners appropriately trained to address the range of public health needs and challenges within South African and African settings.
