Mycobacterial Genetics

The MSc in Medicine by research in the field of mycobacterial genetics is offered by the Centre of Excellence for Biomedical TB Research, and provides an opportunity to gain experience in basic molecular biology techniques such as cloning, PCR and bacterial genetics, among other things.

Overview

The Master of Science in Medicine by research in the field of mycobacterial genetics at the Wits node of the CBTBR provides a dynamic working and training environment for a career in molecular sciences. It provides an opportunity to learn/gain experience in basic molecular biology techniques such as cloning, PCR and bacterial genetics. Opportunities are also available for clinical and translational research aimed at assessing mycobacterial physiology in sputum which involves culturing and handling of the human pathogen, Mycobacterium tuberculosis under BioSafety Level III (BSL3) conditions to better understand the growth and drug-resistant mechanisms. Specialist techniques in microbial physiology such as microarrays, HPLC, cytometry and confocal microscopy are applied to understand the role of cell wall enzymes to identify novel drug targets for the treatment of tuberculosis.

Career Opportunities

This degree provides an opportunity to develop genetic and microbial skills to work with human infectious pathogens under containment laboratories. These skills bode well for obtaining job prospects for providing technical assistance to on-going projects in molecular laboratories or for further development of a scientific career in the field of molecular biology.

Curriculum

Two year program comprising lab work.
