MBBCH / GEMP undergraduate psychiatry teaching (curriculum changes from 2018)

MBBCh 4th year / GEMP 2

Undergraduate teaching is starting from MBBCh 4th year / GEMP 2. The MBBCh 4th year / GEMP 2 is currently part of a 6-week block and incorporates lectures, learning topics and case-based discussions.  Assessment is with multiple-choice questions. The goal is a foundation of basic terminology and concepts applied to case histories. (Dr S Valabdass/Dr T Mdaka)

MBBCh 5th year / GEMP 3

The MBBCh 5th year / GEMP 3 is a 2-week block at Sterkfontein Specialized Psychiatry Hospital for 2 weeks as part of a 6-week block. There are formal tutorials with clerked patient presentations. There is submission of a written up clerked case for marking as part of the block mark. The end of year exam is a written modified essay (short answer) questions and MCQ with an oral component of clinical topics. The goal is practical clinical case exposure to cover history taking and assessment. (Dr V Poliah)

MBBCh 6th year / GEMP 4 (Dr W Friedlander)

The MBBCh 6th year / GEMP 4 final year is a five-week block at adult inpatient units (with child & adolescent psychiatry exposure at:

●    Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (&CHBAH -Child and Family Unit)

●    Helen Joseph Hospital (&Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital – Child and Family Unit)

●    Tara Hospital (& Tara Hospital – Child and Family Unit)

●    Charlotte (CMJAH)

It comprises clinical exposure as a junior intern with exposure to running cases. After hour exposure is at general hospitals with exposure to acute psychiatry admissions. End of block exam is written MEQ (short answer modified essay questions) and MCQ with a clinical exam with a clerked long case and an oral component of clinical topics

The undergraduate teaching & training committee is overseen by Dr Wendy Friedlander who also coordinates the GEMP 4 programme. Dr Vinola Poliah manages all GEMP 3 students and Dr Lerato Mokwatsi  coordinates the 3rd year OT teaching.
