Teaching
We are involved in teaching under- and post-graduate students in the School of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand. We teach general paediatrics to all levels of undergraduate students, paediatric haematology and oncology to paediatric registrars and have an active fellowship programme in paediatric oncology.
Undergraduate Programme
Clinical bedside teaching and examinations of GEMP 2, 3 and 4 students
Postgraduate Programme
- We train medical officers for the DCH and Part 1 examinations for Paediatrics.
- Paediatric registrar training: each trainee does a 2-month rotation in the unit. We teach the paediatric haematology and oncology to the registrars, including oncology emergencies.
- Each of our consultants is actively involved in supervision of registrars for the Master’s in Medicine (Paediatrics), a requirement to fulfil the requirements to qualify as a paediatrician.
- Fellowship training for Paediatric Oncology
A two-year training course for subspecialisation in Paediatric Oncology culminating in a Certificate in Paediatric Oncology examination through the College of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA).
- We also supervise Master of Science dissertations for our fellows.

To date we have trained the largest cohort of paediatric oncologists nationally and have also trained the first paediatric oncologists for Kwa-Zulu Natal and Zimbabwe.
