Division of Gastroenterology
We deliver Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Service, under the auspices of the University of the Witwatersrand, for the 3 academic hospitals; Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH), Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH) and Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital (RMMCH). We provide inpatient and outpatient care to children with gastrointestinal , hepatological and nutritional problems. We have a wide referral base that includes besides Gauteng, other South African provinces and Southern African countries.
At the University of the Witwatersrand, we believe training in paediatric gastroenterology will be among the best in the country, as the fellow training rotation will ensure exposure to the three academic hospitals; CMJAH, CHBAH and RMMCH. Each hospital has their own focus and unique patient population, and a wide variety of pathological states, diagnostic and treatment options will ensure an excellent all-round training.
The university also has an affiliation with a private institution, the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre(WDGMC). This centre has the busiest paediatric liver transplant programme in the country and all three hospitals above refer their patients here for liver transplantation, until such time as paediatric state transplantation is developed at CMJAH/NMCH. Option of rotation through a Transplant Unit allows fellows to gain exposure to state of the art transplant facilities and attend ward rounds and interdisciplinary transplant meetings.
