BEd (Hons) (Deaf Education)

The option in Deaf Education offered by the Centre for Deaf Studies will begin to equip you to work with Deaf learners in both schools for the Deaf and inclusive education environments. This package has four compulsory topics and will examine issues such as disability and deafness, Sign Language and the fact that Deaf people identify themselves as a linguistic and cultural minority group. Contemporary debates in the field on Deaf Education will also be investigated along with issues such as the role of South African Sign Language within the Bilingual-Bicultural classroom.

Throughout the course, the focus will be on the integration of theory and practice in Deaf Education.  Mode of instruction is subject to availability. 足球竞彩app排名s may be required to complete a research project that focuses on Deaf Education (EDUC 4036) during this year of study.

Unit 1: Sign Language for Education: Theory and Practice 1 (EDUC 4165A)

Lecture times: One quarter: Mondays 3-6pm online or Face-to-face if permitted.
Mode: online with weekly online lecture/discussion session.

This course will provide an introduction to Sign Language, Deaf Culture and the Deaf Community with specific reference to the South African context. Throughout the course the primary aim will be to enhance the students' understanding of the Deaf learner, with Sign Language being the focus within the educational context.

Unit 2: Foundations of the Education of Deaf Learners (EDUC 4165A)

The aim of this course is to introduce students to contemporary issues and debates within the field of Deaf Education both nationally and internationally. In addition to these various communicative perspectives on educating the Deaf, the course will deal with language and reading instruction and the role of the teacher of the Deaf. The focus throughout will be on the application of the theory of Deaf Education into practical classroom situations.

This course builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in Sign Language part 1, and will focus on more advanced linguistic and practical aspects of South African Sign Language (SASL).

In line with the Bilingual Education paradigm, Sign Language will be viewed as the first language of the Deaf learner, and literacy learning discussed from a second language learning perspective.

Unit 4: Psychology of Deaf Education EDUC4166A

This course will discuss Sign Language and the cognitive development of the Deaf learner. Issues such as language development, social development, emotional development, creativity and memory will be discussed from both a theoretical and practical perspective.
In order to effectively link theory and practice, the course will include a practical intervention component of cognitive enrichment through Feuerstein’s Mediated Learning Experience for the classroom.
