SOCIAL WORK INTERNSHIPS
Social Work Internships
The Counselling and Careers Development Unit (CCDU) is a recognized Social Work placement site for both 3rd and 4th year Wits Registered Social Work students. The 4th year (Hons) placement is done through an internship for students who are enrolled in their 4th year of a Bachelors Degree for Social Work; in order to fulfil the fieldwork instruction requirements of the degree. The CCDU Social Work Internship programme is usually guided by the School’s guidelines but generally runs from February until October on an annual basis. The internship programme allows students the opportunity to put theory into practice under the supervision of trained staff and within a structured programme.
What does the internship look like?
- Opportunity to practice the following – Individual counselling, Group and community work.
- Presentation opportunities by facilitating psychoeducational sessions.
- Supervision sessions on each intervention module, including the supervision of reports and written feedback
- Group supervision – with other students placed on campus
- Social Work theory presentations
- Continuous student development through team support and additional training opportunities
The application process?
- Step 1: September - CCDU sends out information to the Wits School of Social Work for the available internship and invites application from interested Social Work students, who meet the criteria. This is usually described in more detail in the invite. Should you wish to apply for the placement programme, kindly consult the School.
- Step 2: October – Applications are received, applicants are shortlisted and the successful candidates are invited to an interview at CCDU.
- Step 3: November – Successful Interns are confirmed and agreement contracts are signed.
- Step4: February (Following year) - Internship starts and end in October annually
Benefits of the Internship?
- The CCDU provides an opportunity for social work interns to collaborate with the Wits community as a whole and its stakeholders.
- The CCDU provides a platform for Social Work interns, to work under supervision and to apply their knowledge and skills through the three methods of Social Work intervention.
- Social work interns are given opportunity to work within multidisciplinary teams for the conscious and critical application of theory integration within practice.
How does the Internship meet SACSSP standards, ethics and principles?
- CCDU recognises that Social Work intern are registered as Social Service professionals under the SACSSP and as such are required to adhere to the professional code of ethics applicable to his or her profession.
- CCDU will provide supervision, for the purposes of sharing professional experience, insight, critical reflections and the sharing of current approaches and good practice.
- 足球竞彩app排名s are expected to apply the specific Social Work norms and the respective standards appropriately as they work with clients and communities of the CCDU – this will be monitored through the supervisory process.
- Social Work supervisors are required to ensure that there is attendance of School meetings and contact session to keep abreast of the curriculum requirement.
- Social Work Supervisors are required to ensure a high level of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in line with professional standards.
