Protest

CALS works with many communities who seek to exercise their right to protest. We assist them by attending meetings with the police and municipalities, and providing legal advice and assistance. Recently, we have noticed some disturbing trends in this area. The reponse to protests has become increasingly violent and protest itself has been criminalised. With many communities asking for support, it was obvious we needed a co-ordinated response to this incorporating direct legal services, research and activism.

CALS thus formed the Right2Protest Project along with the Right2Know Campaign, Lawyers for Human Rights and the Freedom of Expression Institute. Right2Protest conducts training and research, and provides legal support, including applying for bail and running a telephone advice hotline. The Project is currently staffed with an attorney and co-ordinator based at CALS. Learn more about the project here
