Bachelor of Accounting Science (BAccSc)
The Bachelor of Accounting Science is required if you wish to qualify as a Chartered Accountant.
Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) in Accounting
The B Com Accounting degree is a three-year full-time programme comprising both compulsory courses and elective courses that students can choose from within the School of Accountancy, School of Law, School of Economics and Finance or from the Faculties of Science and Humanities.
Postgraduate Diploma in Accountancy (PGDIP) - CA (SA) route
This one-year programme includes courses in:
- Financial Accounting
- Taxation
- Auditing
- Management Accounting and Finance
N.B All four courses must be passed in the same academic year.
Postgraduate Diploma in Accountancy Distance Programme
This programme is an online distance course designed to reflect the changing world of information technology and putting the candidate first.
The programme is structured to take place in two (2) phases:
- Phase 1: Completion of 3 short courses and an entrance exam
- Phase 2: Registration and completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Accountancy (Distance)
Postgraduate Diploma in Specialised Accountancy (PGDIP) - ACCA route
This postgraduate programme is the first of its kind offered by a South African University. The Diploma is fully aligned to the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) Professional level exams. The Diploma has been awarded Silver Learning Partner status from the ACCA. It is designed to include two core courses and two elective courses. The core courses include Strategic Business Leader and Corporate Reporting, while the elective courses include:
- Advanced Performance Management
- Advanced Taxation
- Advanced Audit and Assurance
Postgraduate Diploma in Specialised Accountancy in the field of Integrated Thinking and Value Creation
The Diploma is part of the Chief Value Officer (CVO) Programme and part of a continuing research-driven enquiry into integrated reporting, integrated thinking, sustainable development and ethics being undertaken by the School.
Bachelor of Accounting Science Honours (BAccSc(Hons) - CA (SA) route
This is a one-year programme for students that have already completed a Bachelor of Accounting Science at Wits. In addition to completing the four core courses (Financial Accounting IV, Taxation IV, Auditing IV, Management Accounting and Finance IV), candidates will be required to write assignments and a mini research paper in one of the following fields:
- Accounting
- Taxation
- Managerial Accounting
Master of Commerce in Taxation (MCom Taxation)
The Master of Commerce in Taxation provides students with a sophisticated understanding of the general principles of domestic and international taxation.

Master of Commerce in Accountancy (MCom Accountancy)
The MCom Accountancy provides post-graduate students with the opportunity to enhance their career, further their knowledge and become a specialist in their particular field.
Master of Commerce in Financial and Integrated Reporting
This degree is research-intensive and covers various statistical programs.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The PhD programme is typically aimed at MCom graduates who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding in selected areas of accounting and finance. The PhD is awarded on the basis of a thesis only.
The Wits ‘Chief Value Officer’ programme is aimed at Finance professionals qualified as CA (SA) or equivalent qualification, and registered members of SAICA, and Chief Financial Officers and financial accountants interested in reporting an integrated view of value and performance.
The programme is offered online and may be taken as either a set of short courses or as a postgraduate diploma.
