The Role of the University Secretariat
The University Secretariat plays a pivotal role in supporting the University’s governance and management, ensuring that institutional processes are transparent, efficient, and compliant. As the custodian of governance administration, the Secretariat:
- Drives effective policy administration, ensuring policies are developed, maintained, and applied consistently across the University.
- Provides professional secretariat services to the University’s primary governance structures – including Council, Senate, the University Forum, the Executive Committee of Convocation – as well as to most of their standing committees.
- Safeguards the University’s institutional memory by maintaining accurate minutes and records, thereby preserving the history and continuity of decision-making.
- Ensures effective information management and legislative compliance, offering strategic guidance on governance matters to strengthen institutional accountability.
- Supports the University Registrar in carrying out institutional governance responsibilities.
In addition, the Secretariat provides secretariat support to the University’s key management structures, including the Vice-Chancellor’s Office (VCO) and the Senior Executive Team (SET).
The Secretariat also manages the Wits Governance Portal, the central repository for governance information and meeting documentation. The Portal serves as a vital resource for accessing governance-related materials, enhancing transparency and accessibility across the University community.
